Location

The Costa Ballena is the stretch of coastline running from Dominical to Palmar, with the Whale's tale of Playa Uvita at it's center. The village of Ojochal is set off the best highway in Costa Rica, just 10 minutes south of Uvita. It is easy to get here, and soon, it will be easier still.

It is just a short drive from Ojochal to two different airports, and only 20 minutes from the soon to arrive International Airport in Palmar. Our proximity to Manuel Antonio National Park, the most-visited tourist destination in the country, means we benefit from the transportation infrastructure that exists there, with many buses, private shuttles and cars for hire. The last segment of the road coming from Manuel Antonio is in the process of being paved, which means that very soon, many more people will be making their way to Costa Ballena.

GETTING HERE

From the U.S. cities of Miami, Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, and Atlanta, more than 40 direct flights are available daily. Costa Rica is in the Central Standard time zone, meaning the time in Costa Rica varies by no more than two hours from any U.S. city. Two commuter airlines, Nature Air and Sansa, serve two airports that are within an hour.s drive of Ojochal.

LOCAL FLIGHTS
Palmar Sur, 15 minutes to the south of Ojochal, has several flights arriving each morning from the airports of San Jose, Liberia, and Pavas (for Nature Air). The Quepos Airport, about an 90 minutes to the North of Ojochal, also has many daily flights from San Jose and will soon to be just a 50 minute drive, once the paving of the highway is complete. Rental Cars, Taxis, and shuttles can also be arranged to meet visitors at each airport.

DRIVING

If you are driving from San Jose it is a four to four and a half hour drive depending on weather and trafic. Refer to the map below for directions via San Isidro. The coastal highway route, which takes you through Punteranas, Jaco, and Quepos, takes an hour longer. The nearly complete multilane highway going from San Jose to Jaco, and the completed paving of the Quepos to Dominical road will soon shorten the drive three hours.
